I was looking up quotes when I came across the John Stewart Mill quote that is so often misquoted….once you read the full quote it might become obvious the propoganda value of the shortened version….and why many governments would not want their people to read the full version…..
“But war, in a good cause, is not the greatest evil which a nation can suffer. War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse. When a people are used as mere human instruments for firing cannon or thrusting bayonets, in the service and for the selfish purposes of a master, such war degrades a people. A war to protect other human beings against tyrannical injustice – a war to give victory to their own ideas of right and good, and which is their own war, carried on for an honest purpose by their free choice – is often the means of their regeneration. A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. As long as justice and injustice have not terminated their ever-renewing fight for ascendancy in the affairs of mankind, human beings must be willing, when need is, to do battle for the one against the other.”

Hello! I just discovered your site today. I think it is great, especially how you have the quotes categorized! My blog is primarily about writing and words, but I include a section on quotations because quotations often inspire my own writing.

If you want to check out my site to see if you can use any of the quotes I put up there, please do!

  4. Sorry for the late comment Carlos I have been busy but here I think is a good quote by Mark Twain about good workers…

What work I have done I have done because it has been play. If it had been work I shouldn’t have done it. Who was it who said, “Blessed is the man who has found his work”? Whoever it was he had the right idea in his mind. Mark you, he says his work–not somebody else’s work. The work that is really a man’s own work is play and not work at all. Cursed is the man who has found some other man’s work and cannot lose it. When we talk about the great workers of the world we really mean the great players of the world. The fellows who groan and sweat under the weary load of toil that they bear never can hope to do anything great. How can they when their souls are in a ferment of revolt against the employment of their hands and brains? The product of slavery, intellectual or physical, can never be great.

  7. Hello OCS,
My work is with men who have committed sexual offenses and the challenge is great as you can imagine. I will share a quote with you that I have used in addressing the quality of our speech:

“Profanity is the language of cowards.”

I have seen some results from these offenders in their struggle to become men of integrity.

May God bless you in your challenge of health!

  8. Thanks Dee for the kind words! I will keep it up!

I am looking for a quote that expresses the value and respect for nature, animals and all human beings regardless of sex, colour or race.

Here a few I like (the first being my favourite)

    Albert Schweitzer:
“Until we extend our circle of compassion to include all living things, we will not ourselves find peace!”

    Leonardo da Vinci:
“The time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men!”

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treted!”

    Albert Einstein:
“Nothing will benifit human health and increase chances for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution of a vegetarian diet!”

  14. Thanks Doug I will check out you site!

I heard in a movie “Cousins” with Isabella Rossellilni and Ted Danson this very funny and very true quote. “In life you can either make chicken salad or chicken shit”.
